How Best To Avoid Computer Viruses?
What came first, the computer or the computer virus. LOL, in my line or
work I very often bet that as MIT students were working hard in one classroom
inventing the internet. In another classroom down the hall someone was hard at work
inventing the first virus. And no, I bet none of them were named Al Gore!
Sorry. And from this starting point here we are. We all dread the scurge that
viruses have brought and now we are all at the point where we will download just
about anything to prevent or presious computers from getting a virus.
The most effective way to keep our self safe online is to spend a good bit of
time trying to educate our self about virus, and how they are currently
spreading. Viruses no longer use email as the main outlet to do their damage.
Consider this; every time you do anything on your computer you are
downloading something. You go to a website and your downloading that page to your
computer. If you are chatting then your downloading that chat info as well. If you
want to play a computer game then you download, and download, and dowload that
game. Then you have patches to download. Then you have fixes for those patches that
make your game do more stuff. The for every piece of software you have you also
have to download updates. See, you are downloading everything you do. And somewhere
in all of this downloading you have many chances of getting a virus.
So all we can really do is just stay as hard a target as we know how to be. And
that is what I hope to teach you here. For example, When you buy software we
want to make sure that after we install that software that we update the software
as soon as we can. Many times when we buy software it has already been out for
months and sometimes even years and during this time the software maker has already
issued updates to fix software security issue and other problems that have been
discovered since it has been released to the public. But only update your software
from with in that software. Most all software these days have a menu and somewhere
in this menu you will see a clickable button or tab that saids Update.
Sometimes you may have to look for a menu with a Hlp tab that you can click and
then you will se either a Update tabe or a "Visit Our Site" tab. Don't be
afriad to click the "Vist Our Website" tabe because they may instruct you from
there on how you should update your program.
Three things you should always have on your computer is a good firewall that
is configured correctly. And a good Anti-spyware program that is also
configuared correctly. And at last a good correctly setup Antivirus software. Now
you may feel like your on your on when it come to getting this stuff set up and
configuared correctly but that is where Computer Aid comes in. Look at our Contact
Page andany of us at Computer Aid will be happy to answe your questions with out
trying to hard sell you anything. All of these skills will help you avoid computer
viruses. However, if we want to fight our enemy effectively, we need to know what
it is.
What Is A Computer Virus?
A computer virus is a software program that has been created by someone to
covertly install on your computer with out your permision or perpose that you have
no clue about.. The intention of the virus is to cause chaos and destruction to the
computer. Although most of the cases it is limited to the software, there have been
some instances in which a virus had damaged a piece of hardware. So once a vrus on
your system. It can be programed to start turning off any and al protecton you have
insstalle on your computer. So if this happen then very often you cannot do any tim
of san to remove it. At ths pont you may have to bring it in to Compuer Aid so we can determain the amount of damage it has done
up to that point.
Fortunately, hardware damage is very rare. The only way in which a virus could
damage a piece of equipment is by exploiting a glitch in the programming. For
example, it could slow down the speed of the processor's fan. That way the
processor overheats and melts down. However hardware damage is very rare these
days. They want your information more than they want to crash your computer.
How To Prevent Computer Viruses
How can we prevent computer viruses is the big question that millions of users
make everyday. The first rule in this eternal battle for computer security is to
have an up-to-date antivirus. Notice the word up-to-date. That means that your
antivirus software needs to be updated every day. Viruses are always appearing, so
do not under estimate them. And you must be sure to keep them updated. Most
antivirus companys will issue several updates daily.
The most important factor is always going to be the person sitting in
front of the computer. Although you may have your antivirus updated, that doesn't
mean that there are other weaknesses in your system. As a matter of fact, there
isn't an unbreachable computer anywhere. Even the most expensive system can be
cracked by an expert. And at times it dosne't mean a computer expert. Often times
someone that understands how to manipulate the person sitting at the computer is
more effective than a colledge grad. So, it doesn't matter if you have a guard dog
tied up at the front entrance of your house, if your windows are open
then that's the way they will go.
That's why the rest of your software needs to be updated. And that brings us to
the operating system. In every version of Windows you have your automatic updates
that need to always be turned on. And Computer Aid
suggests that you also run your updates manullaly from time to time. Some times the
auto update feature in Windows may turn it's self off. For no apparent reason. So
from time to time you should check it by just running the updates your self. An
updated Windows works hand in hand with all the rest of your security.
The same thing goes for productivity software like Microsoft Office or even
entertainment software like computer games. All software is under constant changes
once it is delivered into the market. Consider the millions of possible
configurations that a computer program needs to once it is introduced.
